Rule of the Week #3

Published Thu 26 Mar 2026

What is the 5 Metre Rule?
When a free hit is awarded, all opponents must move at least 5 metres away from the ball within the 23m areas. Only the defending team is required to do so between the 23m areas (middle of the ground)
They must not:
  • Stand still within 5 metres

  • Delay the free hit

  • Interfere with the player taking the free hit

If the attacking team chooses to take the free hit quickly, defenders who are within 5 metres must not attempt to tackle, block, or influence play until they have retreated or the ball has travelled 5 metres.

What this means for players
  • Move away immediately when a free hit is awarded
  • Do not try to “creep” forward
  • Allow quick free hits to be taken
  • If you are too close, do not engage in the contest
Quick free hits help keep the game fast and enjoyable.

What this means for umpires
  • Be proactive with voice: “Five please!”
  • Reward teams who want to take quick free hits
  • Do not over-manage every restart
  • Only stop play when defenders clearly interfere
Good free hit management builds credibility and improves game flow.
