Rule of the Week #2

Obstruction - Obstruction occurs when a player uses their body or stick to unfairly prevent an opponent from attempting to play the ball.
Common examples include:

Turning back into a defender

  • Shielding the ball while stationary
  • Running between the ball and an opponent without playing the ball
What this means for players

  • Keep the ball moving
  • Do not rely on body positioning alone
  • Play the ball — don’t protect space
What this means for umpires

  • Look for defenders within playing distance
  • If the attacker turns their back → likely obstruction
  • Early whistle builds control and flow
