Tackling: Play the Ball, Not the Player
The Key Principle
Players must attempt to play the ball only — not the opponent.
Legal Tackles
• Stick tackles from the front or side (in control)
• Clean interceptions with no contact
• Controlled defensive positioning
If it’s safe, controlled, and fair → play on
Illegal Tackles
• Stick contact before the ball
• Body contact (bumping, pushing, stepping in)
• Tackling through the player
• Wild or uncontrolled swings
Even if the ball is won, it can still be a foul
Common Player Myth
“I got the ball first!” — This does NOT make it legal if it was dangerous, caused contact, or took the
opponent out.
Umpire Decision Guide
Was it safe? Was it controlled? Was there contact? Was the opponent disadvantaged?
If NO to any → Free Hit (or stronger)
Game Expectations
• Poor tackles penalised early
• Repeat offences escalated
• Player safety is a priority
Umpire Voice Cues
“Play the ball!”
“No stick contact!”
“Through the player!”
“Keep it safe!”
Why This Matters
Keeps the game safe, fair, and skill-based while building trust in umpiring decisions.
